Wriddhiman Saha to Retire from Competitive Cricket After Domestic Season
He also decided not to participate in the IPL, giving priority to his red-ball career and leading Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.
Veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has announced that he will retire from competitive cricket at the end of the ongoing domestic season. The decision comes after a pivotal moment earlier in the year when Saha, having spent two years with Tripura, was ready to retire. However, a heartfelt conversation with former India captain Sourav Ganguly reignited his passion for the game.
Saha admitted that his attachment to Bengal, his home state, played a crucial role in his decision to continue playing. He shared that Ganguly's encouragement, along with support from his wife, pushed him to extend his career with Bengal and finish his playing days in familiar surroundings.
Despite this renewed enthusiasm, Saha clarified that he would focus exclusively on the Ranji Trophy and not participate in white-ball formats due to physical limitations and a desire to make way for younger talent. He also decided not to participate in the IPL, giving priority to his red-ball career and leading Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.
Reflecting on his journey, Saha acknowledged a period last year when he lost his love for the game. He recalled a conversation with India coach Rahul Dravid in 2021, which made him realize he was no longer part of the team’s plans. However, it was the emotional connection with Bengal, combined with Ganguly’s support, that kept him going.
As Saha prepares to bow out of the game, he is hopeful of a strong finish with Bengal, aiming to reach the Ranji Trophy final. He looks forward to mentoring the next generation, taking pride in seeing younger wicketkeepers, like Abishek Porel, rise to prominence in his absence.
Saha plans to retire with satisfaction, cherishing his journey, and will likely make his final appearance at Eden Gardens, a venue that has been central to his cricketing career.
